A ripper is an attachment that can be fitted to an excavator and then used to break up hardground and surfaces, as well as rocks and dificult areas that would not initially be broken up withan excavator bucket.
Rippers are a cost effective attachment and are used extensively on construction sites dealingwith structural demolition as well as preparing the ground for new framing. Rippers are also usedextensively for landscape work as well as breaking up aprons and concrete.

What does a ripper do on an excavator?An excavating machine for loosening layers of frozen soil, rock (usually of medium strength), andartificial surfaces in layers using the tractive force of a prime mover. Rippers are used inconstruction together with other excavating machines to prepare foundation pits, canals, andtrenches, they are also used for stripping work in open-pit mines.
Rippers are equipped with a trailer or mounted tined device with elements for attachment to theprime mover and a hydraulic drive. A distinction is made between three-armed, four-armed, andparallelogram-mounted devices. Rippers may have remote adjustments for the angle, operatingwidth, and depth of ripping.

The working member of the ripper is a tooth with a replaceable tip and a wear-resistant protectivecovering. Modern rippers usually have a hydraulic drive to raise and lower the teeth, change theripping angle of the tip of the tooth, control the mechanism that positions the arms, and changethe spacing of the teeth. Some rippers have shock absorbers to reduce the transfer of peakdynamic loads to the prime mover and attachments for working with push tractors.
